Musicals more serious than they seem

I’m currently listening to Cabaret, thinking about the undertones. When you watch the movie, you see the duality. There’s fun and entertainment at the club and on the streets the Nazi party are beginning to refine their moves.

This makes me think about other musicals. Chicago – murderers: Sound of Music – Nazis again. The best musicals seem to have one thing in common, which is darkness. I guess you need a backdrop of darkness to see the shades of lightness and everything in between.

Can anyone think of other musicals in the same vein? I’m sure they’re out there.
